Women Having Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Are At A Higher Risk Of Having Liver Cancer
A recent study report published in JAMA says that women who take sugar-sweetened beverages regularly have a greater risk of developing liver cancer. They also have a higher mortality rate compared to men. Along with liver cancer, these women are prone to developing health conditions like chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fibrosis.
The study was conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard. And the study was done on around 100000 women who were in their postmenopausal state. The participants were taken from the Women’s Health Initiative.
About the design, pattern, and participants of the study, The JAMA Network report said, “A prospective cohort with 98786 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 years enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative from 1993 to 1998 at 40 clinical centers in the US and were followed up to March 1, 2020.”
The study was done based on the “self-reports” provided by the participants. And it looked into the risks of liver cancer and other liver diseases. The findings were further verified by the medical records of the National Death Index.
According to the report, 6.8 percent of women among those 98786 participants reported consuming one or more sugar-sweetened beverages every day. These women were found to be at an 85% higher risk of having liver cancer. In addition, 68% percent of them were found to have greater risks of developing chronic liver problems.
Women who reported consuming lesser than three sweetened beverages in a month reported lesser risks of mortality as well as liver diseases.
First author, Longgang Zhao of Brigham’s Channing Division of Network Medicine, says, “To our knowledge, this is the first study to report an association between sugar-sweetened beverage intake and chronic liver disease mortality.
Our findings, if confirmed, may pave the way to a public health strategy to reduce risk of liver disease based on data from a large and geographically diverse cohort.”However, the study has been completely observational and based on self-reports provided by the participants.
So, the study is not Sacro Sant, and the causality cannot be concluded. In simple words, more studies are required to establish why and how sugar-sweetened beverages can cause damage to liver health and put women at higher mortality risk.
