Star Footballers Who Are Ruling the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023

FIFA Women's World Cup

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is grabbing attention for all the right reasons. From the revised pay for women footballers and a mammoth boost in sponsorship, this World Cup is indeed a high point in the tournament’s 32-year history. One more thing to leave everyone in awe is the rise of many stars.

This is the farewell tournament of Megan Rapinoe from the United States and the all-time great Marta from Brazil. But as these stalwarts leave a legacy, we have many names who will be bearing the glory of women’s football on their shoulders.

The first name who impressed everyone in this tournament is Mary Fowler from the Matildas. Sam Kerr has been absent in the tournament, and the team had to rely on others as their biggest bet to lift the cup was going to be missed. The team and everyone in the tournament saw the rise of Mary Fowler.

Mary Fowler’s performance has helped the team fetch a 2-0 win over Denmark and advance to the quarterfinals. Her perfect passes pushed Hayley Raso and Caitlin Foord to score the goals. Caitlin Foord says, “I think Mary has been class this whole tournament. When she’s on the ball she’s going to create or get a shot off or score a goal.”

Previously, she proved her mettle in the final game at the group stage. Australia recorded a 4-0 win over Canada, the Olympic champion.

Everything was going pretty well for Lauren James until she was shown the red card in the “round of 16” game against Nigeria. She has been punished with a two-match suspension and hence will miss the quarterfinal match and the semifinal match England is very much likely to qualify for. So, we will only get to see her in the tournament again if England qualifies for the final.

Nevertheless, she is the woman behind the team’s 1-0 win against Denmark, and she was on fire in the match against China. Along with scoring 2 goals, she played active roles in sending the other three shots to the target. Some other names drawing attention in the tournament are Linda Caicedo of Colombia and Melchie Dumornay from Haiti.
