This Thursday, 13th July 2023, indeed marks an important beginning in women’s cricket. The International Cricket Council, or ICC, announces that it’s going to dish out the same prize money in ICC events of men’s and women’s cricket.
This decision came out after ICC’s annual conference in Durban, South Africa. This is, of course, a milestone in ICC’s attempt to achieve parity in prize money by the year 2030. Along with equality in prize money for all ICC events, there will also be parity in the pay offered to men’s and women’s teams finishing in the same position.
Greg Barclay, the chairman of the International Cricket Council, says, “This is a significant moment in the history of our sport, and I am delighted that men’s and women’s cricketers competing at ICC global events will now be rewarded equally.”
Barclay further adds that there has been an increase in the prize money at Women’s cricket events every year since 2017. These increments were done to achieve equality in prize money in men’s and women’s events. Finally, from now on, the ICC T20 World Cups, U19s, and World Cups for men’s and women’s cricket will have the same prize money.
Again, Barclay mentions that this decision made by the International Cricket Council reinforces that the board genuinely perceives cricket as a sport. And this decision also helps the board to equally appreciate every player’s contribution to the game of cricket.
If we look at the prize money for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020 and 2023, there is a magnificent increase from the year 2018. The amount has increased almost five times. So, in 2020 and 2023, the winning team received $1 million, while the runner-up team was rewarded $500,000.
Even if we consider the increase in prize money in the ICC Women’s World Cup, there is impressive growth. In the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup, held in England, the prize money for the winning team was $2 million. In 2022, the same prize money shot up to $3.5 million.
ICC also announced “substantial increases in funding” for each member of the council. This increase has happened as the strategic investment plan got successfully implemented.
