Françoise Bettencourt Meyers: World’s Richest Woman With $87 Billion Net Worth
Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, the granddaughter of L’Oreal founder Eugène Schueller, becomes the richest woman in the world according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
The estimated net worth of this 70-year-old lady is around $87 billion, with a rise of $16 billion this year.
Françoise Bettencourt’s mother, Liliane, was the daughter of Eugène Schueller. Liliane inherited the company and Eugène Schueller’s property, followed by his death in 1957. Françoise Bettencourt Meyers did not share a happy bond with her mother. She even went on to file a criminal case against Liliane.
Naturally, the legal suit and its proceedings propelled the mother-daughter relationship to rock bottom. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Bettencourt said, “I don’t see my daughter anymore and I don’t wish to. For me, my daughter has become something inert.”
If we are to go by the words of one of the lawyers involved in the court case, “the mother massacred the daughter” at first, and then the daughter did the same with her mother.
The relationship between the mother and daughter started deteriorating when Françoise was a teenager. Liliane called her daughter a “cold child,” and she often called Françoise “heavy and slow,” who was always one step behind.
Now, Françoise Bettencourt has got a one-third stake in L’Oreal from her mother. She has been a part of the L’Oreal board since 1997. She is also the chairwoman of the company in which her family holds a stake of 33%.
Françoise Bettencourt became the richest woman in the world when her mother died in 2017 at the age of 94. She also inherited the Paris mansion of her mother. Before that, her mother, Liliane Bettencourt, was the richest woman in the world.
The current richest woman in the world is also known for her books. Her books cover various topics, including Judaism and Greek Mythology.
Her last work as an author was “Regard sur la Bible.” It was a biblical commentary, and it was published back in 2008.
