Early Life
Born to parents David and Kristi Johnston, she grew up with her sister Melanie. Both sisters used to play for the Sereno Soccer Club here in Phoenix. Through the American Youth Soccer Organization, Julie Ertz was first introduced to soccer.
Julie later acknowledged that joining the Sereno soccer club “it ended up being the best decision (she’s) ever made.” This was because Sereno was a nationally recognized soccer club.
Julie Ertz played for the team since 2004 to 2010 in the U3 and U19 soccer teams. Being the captain and team member of the team, she won state titles about nine times.
When Ertz was at Santa Clara University, where she studied communications and also played for the Broncos soccer team in the midfielder position. Since her Freshman year, she has played in about 20 games.
This is why she was named the “WCC Freshman of the Year,” and this is when she got the “NSCAA All-West Region Second Team” and also the “Soccer America All-Freshman First Team.”
Career In Soccer
In 2014, Julie Ertz was selected in the first round during the 2014 NWSL College Draft by the team Chicago Red Stars. After signing with the team, she first appeared in April against the team Western New York Flash.
Although the Chicago Red Stars came up fifth in the season, Ertz was tagged the “NWSL Rookie of the Year.” During 2015, almost half the season was missed by Julie Ertz current team as she had committed to play with the national US women’s team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Julie was then elected as the captain of the United States under-20 team for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Japan in 2012. They won the CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship. They won the under-20 Fifa World Cup in Japan, and she won the Bronze Ball award as well.
Slowly but steadily, Julie earned her way up the scale, winning prestigious tournaments like the 2014 ”CONCACAF Women” qualifying tournament and the “2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.” Ertz was on the team for the Algarve Cup in 2015 and even went on to win the tournament.
In 2019, coach Jill Ellis in an experimental attempt shifted Julie Ertz’s position from center back to defensive center midfield. And to their surprise, their experiment was a success as she was then titled “U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year.”
